Day 215: Kampot and Caves

Kampot is our last stop in Cambodia before we head up to Phnom Penh and catch our flights out. It’s a tiny little place just a bit further inland and East of Sihanoukville. Today we caught a tuk tuk with another girl and went to go visit some caves, which Clem and I ended up sort of potholing through. It was as terrifying as I had imagined it to be, but still it was not entirely pleasant, especially as it was incredibly sweaty in there. The countryside around here is really beautiful; its very flat and you can see for miles, all the houses are on little stilts so that in the rainy season they avoid the flooding. The roads are just dirt tracks lined with palm trees and various other trees, with little motorbikes and mopeds whizzing along throwing up red dust.

Day 213: Koh Rong

So we arrived in Sihanoukville on the 7th August and had a funny night out at some beach bars. The other day we took a high speed ferry out to Koh Rong island, about an hour off the Cambodian coast. It’s the most beautiful place and the beaches are so gorgeous. We have checked into a little beach bungalow, which is about 20m from the water. Its pretty chilled here and everything moves at around 0.1mph- it took about an hour one morning to get some eggs on toast from a restaurant even though it was totally empty!

Day 209: First Cambodian bus

We said goodbye to Lily today as she is off to Australia with her mum to do a big tour of all her relatives there, but she is going to come and stay with me in Melbourne when I get back there in a couple of weeks. Today we had our first experience of Cambodian bus, which was interesting to say the least. Clem, Ellen and I were all shoved in the bottom “bunks” which had no windows and felt more like a coffin than a seat.

Day 208: Ankor Wat

So today’s plan was to wake up at around 4.30am and get a little tuk tuk to the temples so we could see sunrise. We actually made it there for sunrise, except there was no sunrise due to it being too cloudy which was a bit of a shame as it just sort of got gradually lighter. Anyway, along with a whole hoard of disappointed tourists we began exploring the rest of the temples. We managed to loose Clem within the first ten minutes and it took us about another hour or so to find her again patiently waiting at the entrance. Our little tuk tuk man took us around a selection of various temples, including the one in Tomb Raider. I think we made it to about three o’clock, before we all decided we had seen enough temples to last a lifetime.
