Day 183 & 184: Huế

We arrived after rather a stressful night bus from Hanoi to Huế on Sunday morning, as we were suppose to stop off at a place called Dong Hoi to visit the Phong Nha caves-which were only discovered in the last few years. Sadly we arrived in Dong Hoi far too late and decided that it was best to continue on the bus down to Huế (taking another 4 hours), total bus journey of 18 hours! We had a pretty relaxed day yesterday and found a pool to sunbathe next to. Today we spent the morning at a beach a few kilometres outside of the city, which was pretty deserted apart from some fishing boats and a few locals who seemed to find it hilarious that two white girls were on the beach. This afternoon, although we were a little sunburnt and weary, decided that we should probably take a trip to the citadel where Emperor Gia Long resided once he had taken control of Vietnam. In 1804 the first foundations of the citadel were built. It was such a shame as so much of the citadel had been destroyed during the Battle of Huế in the Vietnamese War. However, there are huge plans to restore and rebuild huge areas of the site.
