Day 37: Salar de Uyuni

On Monday we took an overnight bus from La Paz down to Uyuni which took a horrendous 14 hours, once there we found the tour company we would be going with and the rest of our group which included two Australian girls, Bella and Isabelle, a couple also from Australia and then a girl called Tony and I can't remember where she was from. We set off with our guide, Bruno, in some sort of 4x4 and our first stop was the train cemetery. It was an abandoned railway from the 19th century to carry minerals around Bolivia, but now there are a tourist attraction and everyone seems to climb all over them. Our next stop was the actual salt lakes themselves, however, as it is the rainy season here parts of the lake are actually covered by a thin layer of water at the moment. We all took the typical "salt lake" pictures and then proceeded on to the Hotel de Sal for some very yummy lunch courtesy of Bruno. After a few more photo opportunities we then continued driving around the lake until the car broke down. We were all quite happy sitting on the roof sunbathing, until we realised that we also needed to catch our bus back that evening and it didn't seem like the car was going to start. Eventually with some help we began moving again, and we returned back to Uyuni extremely slowly. The bus back to La Paz was awful though, two 14 hour back to back buses is not a good plan.
